| Trailer Tech Talk
We appreciate the opportunity to acquaint you with the trailers we offer. We strive to build the best boat trailers using the highest quality materials and workmanship. We invite you to compare the performance of a fully welded box tube steel frame to cheaper frames using channel and angle iron steel. Boat Trailer Design and Specifications There are many factors which must be considered in designing, engineering, and specifying a proper trailer for your boat. The better informed a customer you are , the better chance you will receive the trailer you and your boat deserve. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating [G.V.W.R.] The total weight rating of your trailer takes into consideration both the weight of the trailer and what it will carry. It is important to know how heavy your boat with motor is, how much water and fuel is held, and how much the equipment you carry weighs. With this information, we can place the capacity of the trailer within our model categories. Model Categories By G.V.W.R. Rating The G.V.W.R. rating is dictated by the ratings of axles, wheels, springs, brakes, actuators, and frame materials. We designate our models to coincide with the G.V.W.R. ratings of 900#, 1,500#, 2,200#, and 2,900# for our single axle models without hydraulic brakes. Our single axle model with hydraulic brakes is rated at $3,600#. Our tandem axle trailers all have hydraulic brakes. They are rated at 5,000#, 6,000#, 7,000#, and 10,000#. We offer trailers with greater capacities. We will furnish details and pricing upon inquiry. Frames and Tooling Our Model 900 and Model 1500 are light duty boat utility trailers engineered to carry dinghy's, aluminum boats, smaller sail boats, and personal water craft. We have standard jigs and tooling for these lighter duty trailers. We have tooling and adjustable jigs for our other models in three different widths. This permits us to select the best frame width for your particular boat. Superior Engineering and Custom Fit Once the trailer capacity, frame width, and length is determined, the remainder of the trailer is specified by our designer. The next most critical factor is fitting the boat via bunk and other support systems to the trailer. The price of the trailer includes this so long as we either have done this model in the past or can receive your boat at our facilities for fitting. We have experience in fitting the many types of hulls required by the most demanding manufacturers, dealers, and customers. Tongue Weight It is important to properly place the boat on the trailer for proper balance and tongue weight. Too light, and the trailer fish tails. Too heavy, and the rear end of your vehicle is lowered too much. Proper placement of the winch and winch stand and proper placement of the axles creates the balance required. This is why we offer an adjustable axle and spring chassis and adjustable winch brackets. Each customer has a different mix of vehicle, equipment carried, and uses. Adjustability permits the axles to be positioned forward or aft as required. Many power boats have most of their weight in the stern, thus the axles need to be placed toward the stern. Sailboats and other boats have their weight toward the center which requires the axles be positioned more forward. Fabrication Specifications It is best to specify as much as we can the features you require for the fabrication process. The best trailer is one which has as many welded parts as can be accomplished. A bolt-together trailer with bolt-on parts is an inferior trailer. Once the frame and parts are coated, we cannot add welded parts and features without added cost. The following features should be considered: Tongue Selections We offer either removable or swing away tongues for those who need to fit their trailer into smaller areas or wish to reduce their storage fees when charged by the lineal foot. Spare Tires and Holders Its always nice to have one when you need it. We offer welded on space tire holders in different configurations and spare tires in all sizes. Winch Stands, Winches, Bow Rubbers, and Straps or Cables We offer as standard a sturdy adjustable winch stand with winch to match the boat. Many upgrades are offered such as pontoon boats with ladder access, larger profile neoprene bow supports, and upgraded winches with greater capacity, two speeds, and brakes [to prevent dropping that mast that you are stepping]. Hydraulic [Surge] Brakes and Actuators We offer drum brakes and Disc brakes. Disc brakes stop better and can be better maintained as they are open and accessible. A drum brake is enclosed and for longer life requires a flush out kit for maintenance . We offer as standard Atwood or Dico actuators at various capacities. The sleek and better performing Unique Functional Product actuator is offered as an upgrade. Brakes on more than one axle should also be considered. Axles, Springs, and Wheels Axles come in different capacities, configurations, and coatings. Our lighter duty boat trailers have painted axles and are either straight or dropped. Dropped axles cost more but lower the boat for a lower launch profile. Most of our larger galvanized trailers come with galvanized axles or their equivalent. Most are dropped. We also offer torsion axles for the best ride and performance. They cost a bit more, but are worth considering. Springs come is different capacities and come either leaf [as standard] or mono. The mono springs can be coated better as they do not have the friction points of leaf springs. Tires also come in different sizes and capacities and coatings: powder coated white, galvanized, or chrome. We install trailer rated tires which have thicker sidewalls to withstand the greater abuse trailer tires receive versus auto or truck rated tires. Other Fabrication Options Inboard, out drive, and outboard rear cut-outs, prop guards, extended frames, upgraded tube, additional cross-members, trussed frame supports for extreme Baja uses, and many other options are offered. We can quote these options individually. Bunk and Side Guide Options Some of our base prices include only one set of bunks. Additional bunks, rollers, vertical side guides, rail type side guides, inner guides for pontoon boats, and the like can be specified and individually priced.
